A case report of left paraduodenal hernia with a spontaneous reduction on follow-up: the rare demonstration on computed tomography

Abstract: Background Left paraduodenal hernia (PDH) makes for around 40% of all internal hernias. It is due to the prolapse of bowel through fossa of Landzert, an anatomic variant that is found in around 2% of the population. This hernia is presumed to be spontaneously reducible in many patients with recurrent symptoms. Case presentation The present report shows the case of this condition in a 65-year-old male presenting with recurrent abdomin… Show more

“…Internal hernias, although uncommon, are a well-recognized cause of intestinal obstruction. The most prevalent type, constituting approximately 53% of cases, is the PDH, which exists in two forms: right-sided PDH and left-sided PDH [ 6 ]. The mesentericoparietal fossa of Waldeyer is the aperture on the right, while the fossa of Landzert is located on the left, which accounts for three times as many cases [ 7 ].…”

“…However, when Gastrographin is not able to transit and in cases in which it is not effective, surgical intervention is recommended within 72 hours [20] . MDCT makes it possible to incidentally detect asymptomatic PDHs and in some cases PDHs could reduce spontaneously [21] .…”

“…5 Computed Tomography is the more relied upon radiologic method for these hernias. 8 CT may show cluster of small bowel loops behind the mesenteric vessels. 8,9 Patients are treated via surgical intervention whether the patient is asymptomatic or symptomatic as the risk for bowel obstruction or strangulation is very high in untreated hernias.…”
