A Case Report on Intratendinous Ganglion Cyst of the Semimembranosus Tendon

Abstract: Ganglion cysts are benign cystic masses that occur in association with musculoskeletal structures. The aetiology of ganglion cysts is controversial; however, it is generally thought to result from myxoid degeneration of connective tissue associated with joint capsules or tendon sheaths, to which the lesions are usually attached. They may occur in any part of the extremities within muscles, menisci, tendons or bones. Hereby, we present a rare case of intra-tendinous location of a ganglion cyst of the semimembra… Show more

“…This case reported intratendinous ganglion on EIP tendon of a 51-year-old woman which is consistent with the evidence in reported literatures that most of the intratendinous cases occurred in middle-aged women [11] . In a systematic review of twenty-two intratendinous hand ganglia, women are most commonly affected (75 %) and the age distribution was ranging from 43 to 71 years [10] .…”

“…In a systematic review of twenty-two intratendinous hand ganglia, women are most commonly affected (75 %) and the age distribution was ranging from 43 to 71 years [10] . Although the exact mechanism remains unclear, injury may be a postulation because tendon tears and tenosynovitis are often evident around the lesion [11] . Injury to the tendon may triggers the cystic development from chronic tenosynovitis and hyaluronic acid infiltration into the tendon which further dissects the tendon fibers and causes fusiform dilatation [4] , [5] .…”
