A Case Study Analysis of Roundabouts Entry Capacity Localised on One of the Main Road in Sosnowiec City (Poland)

Abstract: This paper is a case study, which among other things includes the analysis of the three roundabouts entry capacity: a turbo-and two spiralroundabouts. These intersections are located in one of the main road localised in Sosnowiec city (Poland). Before reconstruction, this road was characterised by unfavourable road and traffic conditions, insufficient capacity and low traffic safety level. The traffic congestion decreased significantly, traffic and road conditions, as well as the level of road traffic safety, … Show more

“…After rebuilding the analysed road and designing turbo roundabout, the congestion of traffic flow significantly decreased. Moreover, the traffic and road conditions and the level of traffic safety were considerably improved [15]. Fortuijn (2009) found out that turbo roundabouts provide higher capacity than two-lane conventional roundabouts, due to both raised lane dividers and spiral markings, which in turn result in better use of the inner lanes of the turbo roundabout [6,7].…”

“…In the literature, the issue of transport safety is widely described and covers many aspects. There are studies on accident statistics [10,27,28], vehicle safety design [23,36], vehicle safety systems [5,8,14], transport infrastructure [11,24,44], traffic flow [2,20,21], driving techniques [30,37,40], issues related to transport psychology [22,26], legislative issues [1,7,33] or transport safety management systems [17,35,38].…”

“…One of the trends of the last decade has been a significant increase in road traffic [30]. The road network of each city consists of various types of intersections, which enable the handling of collision traffic flows and which can be bottlenecks of the transport system [27]. Because of the narrow streets and the density of the existing buildings within the city, in most cases it is not possible to extend current infrastructure [20].…”
