A Case Study in Maritime Heritage Ecology: Understanding How Structural Changes to the 1898 Shipwreck Portland Affect Biological Diversity and Colonization

Abstract: Shipwrecks are irreplaceable cultural and historical resources, and they also serve as biological habitats. The physical structure of a shipwreck provides habitat for hard-bottom organisms, including sessile invertebrates (anemones, sponges) and protected areas for fish. The structure of a shipwreck is influenced by cultural and natural site formation processes over time. A key unanswered question is: how do site formation processes and changes in biological communities (ecological succession) influence one an… Show more

“… 2020 ). As a shipwreck degrades over time, the range of available microhabitats shifts, leading to changes in the community (Mires and Meyer-Kaiser 2023 ). Many shipwrecks are reduced to a pile of ballast stones or cargo, which represents the closest analogue to natural reefs.…”

“…The entanglement of ghost fishing gear is associated with lower abundance and different invertebrate community structure compared with unaffected portions of the same shipwreck (Meyer-Kaiser et al. 2022b , Mires and Meyer-Kaiser 2023 ), and ghost gear can continue to catch fish and other organisms (Laist 1995 ). Other types of disturbances can range from salvaging shipwrecks to reclaim portions of their cargo and obliterating shipwrecks that obstruct navigable waterways to removing dangerous materials (e.g., oil) from wrecks.…”
