Although small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are an important part of worldwide economy, frequently, researches on SME mortality factors ignores their characteristics. This paper discusses the relation between the SME mortality factors and the small business owner-manager, based on the life cycle stage as an essential part for a better understanding of their closure moment. The research paper was designed in two main complementary phases: (i.) a systematic review focused on failure subject, in order to capture the state of the art of the theme added by the conceptual background of classical SME studies and (ii.) a multiple case study of seven Brazilian SME with a qualitative, descriptive and empirical approach. The results show that small business owner-managers failure business did not use correctly or gave required attention to the mortality factors such as full time dedication, exercising operational activities and managerial roles, discipline, purchase abilities, negotiation, finance and family motivation in keeping up the business. The main contribution for entrepreneurship studies is the indication of an existing relation between mortality factors and the life cycle stages of SME, which evidences the changing importance of the mortality factors throughout the life cycle stages, including closure. The practical results of this paper offers new insights into the relevant SME mortality factors, opening a number of potential avenues for future studies focused on SME, mortality factors and the small business owner-manager.

Psychological capital and entrepreneurial outcomes: the moderating role of social competences of owners of micro-enterprises in East Africa

Business success arises out of the total investments in the venture. This is not limited to tangible inputs such as financial capital, but on intangible resources as well. Entrepreneurship is a highly stressing occupation involving undertaking risks and often demanding workloads; hence requiring mental inputs (psychological capital). Moreover, the entrepreneurial job also involves doing business with other people of different statuses including investors, partners, customers, and employees; hence requiring the entrepreneur to exhibit a great deal of social competence to relate with others. Using two independent studies, we assess the contribution of psychological capital and social competence, as well as their interaction to entrepreneurial outcomes including performance (Study 1), and entrepreneurs' wellbeing, satisfaction, and commitment to their entrepreneurial career role (Study 2). Study 1 uses a sample of 102 owner-managers or managers of small companies in Uganda. In this study, entrepreneurs' social competence is measured as the relationship between entrepreneurs and their employees. Study 2 uses a sample of 228 young self-employed individuals in Uganda and Kenya; and operationalizes social competence via social intelligence. The results were consistent with our assumptions, highlighting the relevance of both psychological capital and social competence to entrepreneurial outcomes. Yet their interaction also has substantial impact on all outcomes examined in these studies.

Os aspectos organizacionais e a mortalidade da pequena empresa: descrição dos fatores relevantes no setor de varejo de vestuário O objetivo deste artigo é descrever os fatores de mortalidade relacionados aos aspectos organizacionais da pequena empresa e a mudança de importância desses fatores ao longo dos estágios do ciclo de vida. As pesquisas sobre mortalidade de pequenas empresas ignoram suas especificidades e o estágio do ciclo de vida no momento do encerramento. Foram estudadas sete empresas do varejo de vestuário. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas e documentos e analisados por meio da técnica de análise de conteúdo. A importância dos fatores relacionados à tecnologia, estrutura organizacional e planejamento variou ao longo dos estágios do ciclo de vida da empresa. Palavras-chave: Aspectos organizacionais. Mortalidade da pequena empresa. Varejo. Vestuário.The objective of this paper is to describe the mortality factors related to the organizational aspects of the small company and the change in the importance of these factors throughout the stages of the life cycle. Research on small business mortality ignores its specificities and the stage of the life cycle at the time of closure. Seven retail clothing companies were studied. The data were collected through interviews and documents and analysed through the technique of content analysis. The importance of factors related to technology, organizational structure and planning varied throughout the stages of the company's life cycle.
