Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) pollution episodes occur frequently in most Chinese metropolises. Because Hong Kong is affected by the East Asian monsoon, its high PM 2.5 pollution is potentially contributed to by a combination of local and regional emissions. This study identified the spatial and temporal characteristics and contributing regions of PM 2.5 pollution episodes in Hong Kong. We analyzed the hourly monitoring data collected at various monitoring stations in Hong Kong for the year 2014 in addition to spatial distributions of PM 2.5 in China in the days preceding high pollution episodes, and we identified the spatial and temporal characteristics of high PM 2.5 pollution in Hong Kong. The relative contributions of local and regional sources to high PM 2.5 episodes were then quantified. Finally, backward trajectories of air masses arriving in Hong Kong during high PM 2.5 episodes were generated to determine the main contributing regions. The results indicated that PM 2.5 levels were higher in the northwestern and southeastern parts of Hong Kong and the Yuen Long station observed the most serious pollution, with a highest daily average PM 2.5 concentration of 118 µg m -3; other areas noted relatively lower concentrations, with maximum daily average concentrations less than 100 µg m -3. Regional sources accounted for almost 70% of the PM 2.5 pollution and were mostly from the northern and northeastern areas of Hong Kong. Six main contributing regions were identified: the northern region of Guangdong province, Henan-Shandong, the Yangtze River Delta, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Anhui-Hubei. Among these, Guangdong province contributed the highest proportion of the pollution. Because PM 2.5 is a major air pollutant in Hong Kong, the findings of this study will be useful for forecasting PM 2.5 pollution episodes. Moreover, the developed methodology can be extended to other pollutants if their characteristics and main contributing regions can be identified.

The variability of the atmospheric concentration of the Be andPb radionuclides is strongly linked to the origin of air masses, the strength of their sources and the processes of wet and dry deposition. It has been shown how these processes and their variability are strongly affected by climate change. Thus, a deeper knowledge of the relationship between the atmospheric radionuclides variability measured close to the ground and these atmospheric processes could help in the analysis of climate scenarios. In the present study, we analyze the atmospheric variability of a 14-year time series of Be andPb in a Mediterranean coastal city using a synergy of different indicators and tools such as: the local meteorological conditions, global and regional climate indexes and a lagrangian atmospheric transport model. We particularly focus on the relationships between the main pathways of air masses and sun spots occurrence, the variability of the local relative humidity and temperature conditions, and the main modes of regional climate variability, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Western Mediterranean Oscillation (WeMO). The variability of the observed atmospheric concentrations of both Be andPb radionuclides was found to be mainly positively associated to the local climate conditions of temperature and to the pathways of air masses arriving at the station. Measured radionuclide concentrations significantly increase when air masses travel at low tropospheric levels from central Europe and the western part of the Iberian Peninsula, while low concentrations are associated with westerly air masses. We found a significant negative correlation between the WeMO index and the atmospheric variability of both radionuclides and no significant association was observed for the NAO index.

In the event of possible nuclear or radiological emergencies, governments or international organizations must develop an emergency response preparedness to ensure the protection of workers, public, intervention personnel and environment. In addition, there is growing concern about possible terrorist attacks or malicious acts using radioactive or orphan sources, so a proper emergency management is necessary. In particular, the assessment of environmental contamination should be carried out to establish which areas have been affected and determine the level of contamination in each of the matrices or environmental compartments, such as air, water, soil, food or vegetation. This is the main objective of the emergency environmental radiological surveillance plans. This PhD thesis provides the development of rapid testing procedures to evaluate the contamination produced by a radiological or nuclear emergency in different environmental matrices. Firstly, a study of the methodology of radiological emergencies response has been developed, taking into account, on the one hand, the environmental matrices to be analyzed, and on the other hand, the term source or radionuclides to be determined in an emergency. Specifically, several source terms are studied produced as a consequence of an accident at a nuclear power plant, a malicious act using orphan sources, "dirty bombs" or improvised nuclear devices, and an accident in a radioactive facility in the Valencian Community. From the results of this study, the procedures to be developed in the PhD thesis have been selected.
