A Coaxial Helicity Injection System for Nonsolenoidal Startup Studies on the PEGASUS-III Experiment

Abstract: Initiating current without using magnetic induction from a central solenoid is a critical scientific and technical challenge facing the spherical tokamak (ST). One such technique that has shown promise on several devices is coaxial helicity injection (CHI). In CHI, a dc voltage applied to large area coaxial electrodes injects current and helicity into the vacuum vessel for plasma startup and plasma current (I p ) sustainment. Major outstanding issues for CHI include eliminating the need for a vacuum vessel bre… Show more

“…Switchyard 3 is allocated for a transient CHI capacitor bank. It is intended to provide I ≤ 32 kA at V ≤ 2 kV for 1-3 ms. Reusch et al [9] provides additional detail on this system. Switchyards 4 and 5 are for ZVS resonant converters (see Section VI) for the DNB and RF sources, respectively.…”

“…PEGASUS-III will be equipped with multiple solenoid-free startup systems to compare, contrast, and combine suitable techniques. These include local helicity injection (LHI) [6], coaxial helicity injection (CHI) [7]- [9], and radio frequency (RF) sources for electron cyclotron and electron Bernstein wave heating and current drive [3].…”

“…Additional upgrades to the power supplies to accommodate the higher TF operation as well as increased total power and pulselength of the helicity injection drive systems are also being performed as discussed in a separate paper [8]. Upgrades to install a CHI system are also discussed separately [9]. The remainder of this article is structured as follows.…”
