A collections-based approach to the species and their distribution based on the bladed Bangiales (Rhodophyta) of Iceland

Abstract: An assessment of the 11 species of bladed Bangiales from Iceland in a collection of approximately 1770 specimens collected between 1883 and 2013 was undertaken by combining results from molecular analysis with examination of morphological variation in order to determine their distribution in detail. Seven of the species grow all around Iceland. Of the remaining four species, Porphyra linearis, P. dioica and Pyropia leucosticta have their northern limit of distribution along the southwestern and western part of… Show more

“…In Europe Porphyra is naturally found along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean [21][22][23], ranging from Portugal to Norway, in the upper parts of the intertidal zone. Europe had a total seaweed aquaculture production of 287.033 tons in 2019 of which 11.125 tons were from seaweed cultivation.…”

“…Until the application of molecular techniques, the identification and taxonomic placement of taxa within the orderbladed Bangiales was highly problematic due to the simple morphology and variation within and between species (Brodie et al, 2008;Gunnarsson et al, 2016). However, a concerted effort by a group of scientists from around the world focussing on the taxonomy of the Bangiales led to a major taxonomic revision of the order based on a two-gene phylogeny (Sutherland et al, 2011).…”
