A compact broadband MIMO antenna for mobile handset applications

Abstract: A compact planar broadband multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) antenna, which has a good performance under MIMO situations with low mutual coupling (<À11 dB) and low correlation coefficient ( À15 dB) is presented. The antenna operates a very wide band with good impedance matching (S 11 <À10 dB), covering the LTE band 33-37 and 39-40. The elements are mounted on the same side of ground plane with the inter-element space of 32 mm. The total size of the array is compact (50 mm  67.2 mm  0.254 mm), suitable for… Show more

“…The mutual coupling is the effect that exists due to the electromagnetic (EM) interaction between adjacent antenna elements. The decrement of mutual coupling results in an improvement in radiation efficiency and vice versa [15]. As in Figure 7, the measured mutual coupling (S 21 ) effectively achieves a maximum of −17 dB, which is considered better than [15,16,19,25].…”

“…S 11 < −10 dB indicates 90% of power is transmitted, and only 10% of power is reflected. Both forward transmission coefficient, S 12 , and reverse transmission coefficient, S 21 , represent a mutual coupling performance [15,16]. The mutual coupling is the effect that exists due to the electromagnetic (EM) interaction between adjacent antenna elements.…”

“…Although, significant concern need to be address in order to enhance the effectiveness of MIMO. These encompass very low mutual coupling, low correlation, high diversity gain, and low total active reflection coefficient [6–8]. As in [9], the performance of two elements with a size of 35 mm × 40 mm operating at frequency range of 3.1–10.6 GHz was discussed.…”
