A compact monopole antenna for WLAN applications

Abstract: The design of a compact antenna for use in wireless devices of the 2.4/5.2/5.8‐GHz wireless‐local‐area network (WLAN) is presented. The antenna consists of an L‐shaped monopole radiator (L‐element) with microstrip‐fed on one side of the substrate and a protruding meander‐microstrip ground stub (M‐stub) on the other side. The L‐element and the M‐stub generate a high‐frequency band at around 5.4 GHz for the high WLAN bands and a low‐frequency band at around 2.44 GHz for the low WLAN band, respectively. The anten… Show more

“…Various CPW-fed antennas have been reported in literature such as multiband [3][4][5][6][7][8], CPW antennas with added strip for WLAN [9][10][11], and asymmetric coplanar strip antennas [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. However, majority of these designs have large antenna dimensions and do not cover all the major bands of WLAN/WiMAX/LTE [13][14][15][16]18].…”

“…Dual-band antenna in [21] with an average gain of 2.5 dB having dimensions 25 mm × 25 mm being compact in size operates only in WLAN band. Further, in some other designs, the antenna gains and reflection coefficient parameters are not impressive compared to the antenna dimensions [15][16][17][18][19][20][22][23][24][25]. In [26], a CPWfed multiband antenna having dimension 70.4 mm × 45 mm is implemented having an impedance bandwidth of 127 MHz for WiMAX band only.…”

“…Nowadays, WLAN (wireless local area network) has attracted attention as the technology that enables short-range wireless communications between different devices such as notebooks, printers, mobile phones and the internet [1][2][3]. Therefore, design of wider bandwidth WLAN antenna is very attractive.…”

“…Therefore, design of wider bandwidth WLAN antenna is very attractive. The Inverted F antenna is highly desirable for they can be manufactured at a much low cost than waveguide-based antenna technology and are considerably more compact and light-weight [3]. There exist many different kinds of antenna designs, such as planar inverted-F antenna, the planar monopole antennas and so on, which enable antennas with low-profile, light-weight, and single-feed to fit the limited equipment space of the WLAN devices [4].…”
