A Compact Planar Monopole UWB MIMO Antenna for Short-Range Indoor Applications

Abstract: A compact, four-element planar MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) antenna that operates in an ultra-wideband is presented for diversity application. The orthogonal position of the unit cells replicates the single antenna thrice, thereby decreasing mutual coupling. A UWB MIMO antenna measuring 35 × 35 × 1.6 mm3 is built using a microstrip line (50 Ω impedance) on an FR4 substrate having a thickness of 1.6 mm. The ground plane and radiator of this antenna are adjusted in several ways to bring it within its o… Show more

“…UWB localization systems are the most recent indoor localization technologies. They consist of a radio-based communication technology for short-range use that makes use of very short radio frequency pulses (less than a nanosecond) [186], transmitted over a large bandwidth (>500 MHz) [179], to detect objects' location devices, as well as people, with excellent spatial resolution [187,188]. The main advantageous properties of UWB are good multipath resolution, a large channel capacity, and low energy consumption [186].…”

“…Antennas can be categorized as planar or non-planar depending on their configuration. Because of their upper layer and bottom layer configurations, the antennas' non-planar configuration complicates implementation and limits its ease of integration [16][17][18][19]. Planar antennas provide greater space for extra components because the ground and the antenna's radiating components are on the same plane [20,21].…”

“…With the development of science and technology, the application of navigation and positioning technology is being increasingly researched [1][2][3], and the methods of navigation and positioning are being gradually diversified. At present, common positioning technologies include global positioning system (GPS) [4][5][6][7], BeiDou navigation satellite system (BNSS) [8,9], inertial navigation system (INS) [10][11][12], UWB (ultra-wide band, UWB) [13][14][15][16][17], machine vision navigation systems [18][19][20][21][22] and LIDAR [23][24][25][26]. Among them, ultra-wide band technology stands out among many positioning technologies due to its low power consumption, strong anti-interference, high penetration power and high positioning accuracy, and its application is becoming more and more widespread.…”
