A compact wideband harmonic suppressed 10 dB branch line coupler using cascaded symmetric PI sections

Abstract: This article presents the size‐miniaturized, wide‐bandwidth, and harmonic‐suppressed 10 dB branch line coupler (BLC) using cascaded symmetric PI sections. The complete design equations are derived to obtain the physical parameters of cascaded PI sections. To validate the proposed design, a 10 dB BLC operating at 0.9 GHz is designed, fabricated, and tested. The reported BLC is having dimensions of 0.175 λg × 0.25 λg and is 76.6% smaller than the conventional coupler. The measured results show that the designed … Show more

“…A number of techniques have been developed to achieve larger bandwidth, harmonic suppression, arbitrary power division, compact size, multiband operation, and filtering response . For example, bandwidth enhancement can be obtained by attaching impedance transformers to each port of the single-section BLC [1][2][3], utilization of two-section/three branch-line topologies [4][5][6][7][8][9][10], but also three-section/four branch-line topologies [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…Thus, couplers with harmonic suppressions are emerged. [23][24][25][26] In References 23, a wideband harmonic suppressed 10 dB BL coupler using cascaded symmetric PI sections is presented. Owning to the cascading and PI sections, the bandwidth reaches 52%, and up to 4th harmonic is suppressed.…”

“…7 The cascade technique is commonly used in the branch line coupler which operates at a single band. 10,11 However, in this work, the designs have wide bandwidths at dual operating bands with the application of cascade technique. Different from the common designs which put emphasize on extending the bandwidth of a single band, the proposed coupler represents the attempt to broaden the bandwidth of each frequency band.…”

“…This letter describes a coupler with wide‐band and dual‐band characteristics that is designed by combining the cascade technique with a cross coupled branch‐line coupler 7 . The cascade technique is commonly used in the branch line coupler which operates at a single band 10 , 11 . However, in this work, the designs have wide bandwidths at dual operating bands with the application of cascade technique.…”
