A comparative analysis of conventional cytopreparatory and liquid based cytological techniques (Sure Path) in evaluation of serous effusion fluids

Abstract: Although, a reduced screening time and clearer smear background are the two major advantages of LBC; the CCP technique provides the better staining quality with sharper cytomorphologic features which is more critical from the cytologic interpretation point of view. “…LBC is being increasing used for nongynae samples including effusion samples in view of its advantages such as better preservation of sample, uniform fixation, and better staining, clearer background, reduced screening time, and applicability of ancillary techniques on stored LBC sample even after four months . LBC sample was found to be better than conventional due to cellular concentration, less clumping and less obscuration in this study.…”

“…Typical chromatin texture and tumor cell cohesiveness with nuclear molding are also depicted (×600) enhanced nuclear features, poorly preserved papillary structures, and an altered cell distribution as compared with CCP [7][8][9]13,14. The predominant pattern was of small cohesive clusters and chains of tumor cells with molded nuclei (N = 22, 53.7%) (Figure 2C).…”

“…6 However, LBC preparation may cause cytomorphologic changes. 9,10 In this report, we review the cytologic details of pulmonary SCC in effusion fluid and describe the cytomorphologic spectra of LBC and of conventional cytopreparation (CCP) smears. Thus, knowledge and experience of the cytologic features of SCC in LBC effusion fluid is required for accurate diagnoses and to reduce false negative results.…”

“…By reducing obscuring elements, uniform distribution of the cells in a thin layer, preservation of the cells and shorter screening time, LBC has been advocated to improve the above shortcomings of wet fixation of conventional cytopreparation (CCP). However, LBC has inherent shortcomings, such as cell shrinkage, artefacts during processing and cost . Moreover, conflicting data still exist on the issue of preservation of cytological features between CCP and LBC …”
