This paper chooses pollutant discharge as the study object and utilizes a modified scatter degree comprehensive evaluation method to establish the pollutant discharge comprehensive evaluation index. Then, using the convergence test model and from the perspective of intensity and gross, this paper respectively studies the convergence of the pollutant discharge at the nationwide level and in the three major regions. The result shows that the pollutant discharge level of the middle region is the highest, whereas in the western one, it is the lowest; that of the eastern region is higher than the national average. The σ convergence, based on the Theil index, shows that only the middle region shows a feeble σ convergence tendency, whereas the other two ones show a different tendency. Besides, considering the differences of the per capita GDP, the industrial structure, the structure of energy consumption and pollution regulation, the β convergence shows that the two variables of all the regions are conditional β convergence, not absolute β convergence.

Heavy metal contamination attracted a wide spread attention due to their strong toxicity and persistence. The Ganxi River, located in Chenzhou City, Southern China, has been severely polluted by lead/zinc ore mining activities. This work investigated the heavy metal pollution in agricultural soils around the Ganxi River. The total concentrations of heavy metals were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The potential risk associated with the heavy metals in soil was assessed by Nemerow comprehensive index and potential ecological risk index. In both methods, the study area was rated as very high risk. Multivariate statistical methods including Pearson's correlation analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, and principal component analysis were employed to evaluate the relationships between heavy metals, as well as the correlation between heavy metals and pH, to identify the metal sources. Three distinct clusters have been observed by hierarchical cluster analysis. In principal component analysis, a total of two components were extracted to explain over 90% of the total variance, both of which were associated with anthropogenic sources.

Geochemistry of soils encapsulated by urban development and dendrochemistry were evaluated to reconstruct heavy-metal accumulation trends in an area of rapid economic development in China. The urban-covered soil spans a time period of 56 years from 1950 to 2006, and the tree cores cover the period from 1977 to 2006. Results from the six heavy-metal elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) analyzed in this study indicate that heavymetal concentrations increase significantly in urbancovered soils dating from 1980, which is corroborated by data from corresponding tree cores. The accumulation rates of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were estimated at 0.91, 0.84, 1.42, 1.39, 1.34 and 1.86% per year, respectively. These high rates of accumulation suggest that anthropogenic sources resulting from rapid economic development led to the magnitude and rates of heavy-metal accumulation. Although reconstruction of heavy-metal accumulation trends using the urban-covered soils (substitutes space for time) introduces some uncertainty when compared with long-term experiments, this study demonstrates that urban-covered soils can provide a vehicle by which historical rates of heavy-metal accumulation can be approximated.
