A comparative analysis of root dentin transparency with known age

Abstract: Objective:To correlate dimensions of root transparency and age, and to assess whether transparency is reliable for age estimation of unknown.Materials and Methods:50 freshly extracted single rooted permanent teeth from 50 different individuals (27 males and 23 females) were collected and their ground sections of 400 μm were stained with 1% methylene blue. The area of the translucent zone was measured by superimposing a transparent graph paper on the ground section under stereomicroscope. The length of the tran… Show more

“…This parameter is least affected by environmental factors and the pathological process. [6181920] It also shows symmetrical distribution on both sides of the jaws. [1821] Furthermore, translucency can be assessed macroscopically on intact teeth, although tooth sections provide better detail.…”

“…[6181920] It also shows symmetrical distribution on both sides of the jaws. [1821] Furthermore, translucency can be assessed macroscopically on intact teeth, although tooth sections provide better detail. [48] For this particular reason, sectioned teeth were used in the present study.…”

“…All of the measurements were carried out on nonsectioned teeth. Once the measurements (in millimeters) of periodontal attachment loss, root length, and translucency for each dental element were obtained, the equations proposed by Lamendin et al (21) and Prince & Ubelaker (20) and from Singhal et al (22) were applied to estimate age. A statistical analysis using linear regression models was then carried out with the aim of evaluating the correlations between known age and dentinal translucency ( Fig.…”

“…Data recommended for use as reference in the development of esthetic restorative materials and clinical shade matching were presented using both CR and TP determinations . Ground 400‐μm sections of root dentin stained with 1% methylene blue were visually assessed for a relationship between root translucency and the subject's age . Vital natural unrestored teeth were analyzed by a digital imaging and shade analysis device, which was used to indicate areas of visually noticeable tooth translucency …”

“…66 Ground 400-μm sections of root dentin stained with 1% methylene blue were visually assessed for a relationship between root translucency and the subject's age. 67 Vital natural unrestored teeth were analyzed by a digital imaging and shade analysis device, which was used to indicate areas of visually noticeable tooth translucency. 68 Regarding other various dental materials, transmittance determinations were used to find significant differences in fiber posts 69 and orthodontic brackets.…”
