A Comparative Evaluation of the Dimensional Stability of Three Different Elastomeric Impression Materials after Autoclaving – An Invitro Study

Abstract: It is well-known fact that all impressions should be disinfected to avoid possible transmission of infectious diseases either by direct contact or cross contamination. Immersion and spray disinfection as well as various disinfection solutions have been tested and proven to be effective for this purpose. But for elastomeric impression materials these methods have proven to be ineffective as they do not prevent cross contamination among the dental team. So autoclaving was one of the most effective sterilization … Show more

“…The result obtained from present study was supported with vitro study of Choi et al (2014) (11) who evaluate the effectiveness of microwave irradiation and hydrogen peroxide against S mutans and E coli for the polyvinyl siloxane impression materials. (13) , as polyether impression materials show same behavior when disinfected by autoclave because of their hydrophilic nature. So, following cold disinfection procedure is indicated for polyether.…”

“…Mereka mendapatkan perubahan dimensi yang signifikan pada hasil cetakan walaupun masih dapat diterima secara klinis. (22) Millar dan Deb telah melakukan desinfeksi pada bahan cetak elastomer dengan mempergunakan otoklaf bertemperatur 134 o C dan tidak mendapatkan perubahan dimensi maupun kekuatan sobek.…”

“…GA (2%) and NaOCl (0.5%) are commonly used disinfectants for elastomeric impression materials [9][10][11]19,22,23) . Many studies have been carried out to find the effect of disinfection procedures on the dimensional stability of elastomeric impression materials 1,5,6,10) and some studies used full arch casts [23][24][25][26] while others studied on a die or disc shaped samples 1,5,13,27,28) . The recommended exposure time for the most surface disinfectants is less than 30 min (for immersion) 13) and approximately 10-15 min without affecting the accuracy 10,13,14) .…”
