“…Previous studies have mostly focused on Fig. 1 Attitudes toward same-sex marriage and lesbian/gay parenting as a function of country attitudes toward LG people, SSM, and LGP in a single country (Costa et al, 2017;Ioverno et al, 2018;Vecho et al, 2018), 8 or two countries (Costa & Salinas-Quiroz, 2019). To our knowledge, only the European Commission study (2015) compared attitudes across different European countries.…”

“…Due to the lack of attachment theory-based studies in Mexico, there is no such thing as normative data. The only available baseline was research carried out in countries with common history, androcentric culture and high levels of gender-role traditionalism and religiosity ( Steffens et al, 2015 ; Costa and Salinas-Quiroz, 2018 ). Related Ibero-American studies that assessed heterosexual parented-families reported similar sensitivity scores but lower security means.…”

“…The 2016 presidential proposal to introduce equal access to marriage for the whole country produced social cataclysm, including declarations from the National Front for the Family (Frente Nacional por la Familia), a right-wing group that opposes same-sex marriage and child adoption. This conservative wave represents a setback in the respect of human rights, since the prohibition of such rights marginalizes LG people and their children and sends a message to the wider community that same-sex families are not legally or morally acceptable ( Costa and Salinas-Quiroz, 2018 ). To the present time, LG people are only able to openly and purposefully partake in creating legally recognized families in 12 out of 32 Mexican States, therefore, research that takes into account prejudice and discrimination against same-sex planned families must be encouraged throughout the country.…”

“…Recent studies indicate, however, that prejudice towards same-sex parenting is still prevalent. In particular, male gender, older age, religiosity, having a lower level of educational attainment, having less contact with lesbian and gay people, and holding conservative political ideologies seem to be the most important predictors of high prejudice towards same-sex parents (Averett, Strong-Blakeney, Nalavany, & Ryan, 2011;Costa, Pereira, & Leal, 2015;Costa & Salinas-Quiroz, 2018;Gato & Fontaine, 2016Ioverno et al, 2018).…”
