A Comparative Study of Endoscopic and Microscopic Approach Type 1 Tympanoplasty for Simple Chronic Otitis Media

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:Tympanoplasty is a common surgery for chronic otitis media. We analyzed the results of endoscopic and microscopic approaches for type 1 tympanoplasty in patients with simple chronic otitis media. MATERIALS and METHODS:We evaluated the records of 95 patients (100 ears) who underwent type 1 tympanoplasty from 2011 to 2014. Group 1 underwent tympanoplasty with a microscopic approach (50 ears), and Group 2 underwent tympanoplasty with an endoscopic approach (50 ears). The epidemiological profiles and pos… Show more

“…Sixteen studies including 1179 interventions were deemed eligible for inclusion . Accrued results, in which endoscopic type I tympanoplasty was as effective as microscopic type I tympanoplasty in a homogenous dataset, indicated a 90.5% graft uptake rate in the endoscopic and 88.3% success rate in the microscopic group (OR: 1.21, CI: 0.82‐1.77; I 2 = 0.0%, P = 0.910) (Figure ).…”

“…[6] In the study by Huang TY et al, the average operation time in microscopic group was 75.5±20.4 minutes, compared to 50.4±13.4 minutes in endoscopic group. [14] The difference in the operating time may depend upon the surgeon and his/her expertise, however it is the general observation that time taken in the endoscopic group is significantly lower in comparison to the microscopic group.…”
