A Comparison Between Lactose Breath Test and Quick Test on Duodenal Biopsies for Diagnosing Lactase Deficiency in Patients With Self-reported Lactose Intolerance

Abstract: LQT is as sensitive as LBT in detecting lactase deficiency; however, it seems to be more accurate than LBT in predicting the clinical response to a lactose-free diet.

“…Compared to breath test, we found agreement in 76% of cases, which is considered as "fair" by the k statistic. This is slightly lower than the 83% of agreement found by Furnari et al 12 In our country, prevalence of lactose malabsorption in school age children has been estimated as of 42% by measuring H 2 in breath test. 23 It is therefore a frequent condition, where the presence of symptoms often determines a suspension of dairy consumption from very early ages, which leads to a low ingestion of calcium, which in turns may predispose to deleterious effects in bone health.…”

“…It is also used to evaluate lactose intolerance through various symptom scores at the time of testing (21)(22)(23). These indirect tests have been validated against both intestinal biopsies (24,25) as well as against (at least) the north European C/T-13910 polymorphism for lactase production (26). Through extensive population-based studies, several findings are worth noting.…”
