A comparison of Ki-67 antigen presentation in acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis and pustular psoriasis

Abstract: Ki-67 is an established marker of cell proliferation. It is highly expressed in psoriasis and correlated with the clinical severity of psoriasis. Higher number of Ki-67 positive keratinocytes has been observed in pustular psoriasis (PP) as compared with psoriasis vulgaris. As for Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), a distinct disease entity but similar in many aspects of clinicopathologic features to PP, Ki-67 immunostaining presentation has never been investigated before. This study aimed to co… Show more

“…Prior to this, AGEP was termed a pustular drug eruption or was considered a variant of pustular psoriasis. Both pustular psoriasis and AGEP are caused by T‐cell mediated generation of neutrophils with hyperproliferation of keratinocytes . Both present with fever and leukocytosis, however, AGEP is typically more abrupt in onset with a high‐grade fever and marked leukocytosis.…”

“…3 A vast array of growth factors, cytokines, inflammatory mediators, and other biological markers are upregulated in psoriatic lesions; some of these alterations also persist in nonlesional skin. 5 Labeling by Ki-67 is a useful way to determine the proliferative activity of any tissue, including psoriasis. 5 Labeling by Ki-67 is a useful way to determine the proliferative activity of any tissue, including psoriasis.…”

“…Its determination is also used in non-neoplastic lesions which are characterized by uncontrollable proliferation of cells, for example in psoriasis [10]. In this disease, excessive proliferation of cells and an improper keratinization process, together with immune disorders, belong to basic pathogenetic mechanisms [11,12].…”
