A comparison of multicomponent electrosorption in capacitive deionization and membrane capacitive deionization

Abstract: In this study, the desalination performance of Capacitive Deionization (CDI) and Membrane Capacitive Deionization (MCDI) was studied for a wide range of salt compositions. The comprehensive data collection for monovalent and divalent ions used in this work enabled us to understand better the competitive electrosorption of these ions both with and without ion-exchange membranes (IEMs). As expected, MCDI showed an enhanced salt adsorption and charge efficiency in comparison with CDI. However, the different elect… Show more

“…No selectivity was found for STP effluent ( ̅ = 0.97; SD = 0.16; N = 4) while S could not be calculated for Eumes river water due to the lack of hardness ions. Preferential removal of bivalent ions is common in MCDI; it is observed in both synthetic feed mixtures [19,32] and real feed water [9]. This phenomenon is the result of diffusion kinetics and adsorption equilibria in MCDI and is attributed to the preferential storage of multivalent ions in ion exchange membranes [32,33].…”

“…As CDI gets more and more attention, many studies have been carried out by scholars all around the world. Most researches are about the electrode materials (carbon aerogel, carbon nanotubes, grapheme) [4][5][6][7], integration of microbial fuel cells and CDI [8,9], membrane CDI [10,11] and flow-electrode CDI [12,13].…”

“…CDI and CAPMIX technologies are EDLC-based technology. Both technologies have been widely investigated in the field of water technology in the past years, and several EDLC cell architectures have been proposed for both systems, e.g., flow-by CDI [69][70][71][72][73] , Membrane CDI 72,74,75 , flow-through electrode 76 , flow-electrode CDI 77,78 , and wire-shaped electrode 19,22,79 . Conventionally, a flow-by CDI is considered as the "conventional" design for CDI application, while the Membrane CDI is the conventional design for CAPMIX application.…”

“…However, besides the electrode behavior, the IEMs could also influence Λ | . For instance, the IEMs show a selectivity towards specific ions based on their valence 71,75 or size 71 . The individual effect of the electrodes and the IEMs is challenging to distinguish in CO2-MCDI experiments.…”
