A Comparison of Regional - Residual Separation Techniques for Gravity Surveys

Abstract: Tasmania lies on a triangular extension of the Australian continental crust, surrounded on two sides by deep ocean basins. Strong regional effects from these features obscure much of the short wavelength character in the observed gravity data. Interpretation of the data requires reliable separation of the residual and regional components of the gravity field.Bouguer gravity data covering onshore and offshore Tasmania have been used to test a variety of methods of regionalresidual separation, including trend su… Show more

“…Along Australia's SE continental margin, gravity anomalies (e.g. Spencer, 2004;Roach et al, 1993;Leaman and Richardson, 1989;Murray et al, 1989), magnetic susceptibility (e.g. Musgrave and Rawlinson, 2010;Glen, 2005;Gunn et al, 1997b;Hill et al, 1997) and seismic reflection profiles (Cayley et al, 2011;Korsch et al, 2002;Rawlinson et al, 2001) were used to image the subsurface geology and associated structures in order to define the basement geology and its main boundaries.…”

“…Bouguer gravity values. Grids and contours of the Bouguer gravity values were available incorporating various processings of these data by Roach et al (1993). The most useful product for interpretation purposes was a residual field from which field distortions caused by the boundary between continental crust and oceanic crust on the east and west coasts of Tasmania and the Moho topography had been removed [ Figure 4b corresponding to Figure 6b of Roach et al (1993)…”
