“…There are two approaches that are mainly found for indicator selection in the literature: the opinion of experts (Doran and Parkin 1994;Bastida et al 2008) and different mathematical-statistical systems such as regression equations and PCA (Andrews and Carroll 2001;Sharma et al 2005). In our study, we used the synthetic soil quality index (SQI), which was based on a mathematical-statistical system (Andrews et al 2002a), to assess the soil quality of the rhizosphere under different vegetation types in the Yuanmou dry-hot valley. Five parameters (OM, pH, MBN, TK and PA), which were considered to be the most important indicators based on the PCA analysis, were selected to calculate SQI.…”

“…A principal component analysis (PCA) was used to select the appropriate indices and their weighting factors. Only the variables with high factor loadings were retained for each principal component (PC), and high factor loadings were defined as having absolute values within 10% of the highest factor loading (Andrews et al 2002a). When more than one variable was retained under a single PC, multivariate correlation was employed to determine if the variables could be considered redundant and, therefore, eliminated from the SQI.…”

“…In the selected principal components, the variables with higher loadings were retained (Mukhopadhyaya et al 2014;Andrews et al 2002). These variables were submitted to one-way ANOVA (not assuming equal variances) and the Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) multiple comparisons test (a = 5%), in order to identify differences in water quality among the sampling sites.…”

“…Soil chemical, physical, and biological attributes (Karlen et al, 2001) have been used historically as proxies to soil quality (Andrews et al, 2002), which is a concept related to intrinsic characteristics of the soil, to its interactions with the ecosystem, and to the type of land use or management. This implies some degree of subjectivity as to individual perceptions of what can be deemed "good quality" (Velasquez et al, 2007;Blanco & Lal, 2008).…”
