A Comparison of SVM Versus Naive-Bayes Techniques for Sentiment Analysis in Tweets

Abstract: The widespread of social communication media on the Web has made available a large volume of opinionated textual data stored in digital format. These media constitute a rich source for sentiment analysis and understanding of the opinions spontaneously expressed. Traditional techniques for sentiment analysis are based on POS Tagger. Considering the Portuguese language, the use of POS Tagging ends up being too costly, due to the complex grammatical structure of this language. Faced with this problem, a case stud… Show more

“…Para este trabalho, a versão Multinomial do Naive Bayes foi utilizada. O SVM é um classificador binário muito utilizado na tarefa de classificação de textos, principalmente, pelo seu bom desempenho [Firmino Alves et al 2014]. Este classificador busca traçar um hiperplano entre dados de duas classes, buscando maximizar a distância entre os pontos mais próximos em relação a cada uma das classes.…”

“…Machine learning methods can be split into two subcategories: (1) conventional methods and (2) deep learning-based [ 14 ]. Conventional approaches apply to traditional machine learning techniques such as Naive Bayes [ 15 ] and support vector machines (SVM) [ 16 ]. Deep learning techniques infer better performance than classical machine learning techniques.…”

“…Their classifier is able to recognize positive, negative and neutral content. [Firmino Alves et al 2014] proposes an accuracy comparison between two machine learning approaches applied to sentiment analysis: Support Vector Machine and Naïve Bayes. The general idea of this work was to replace POS Tagger for identification of opinionated tweets.…”
