A comparison of two techniques for bibliometric mapping: Multidimensional scaling and VOS

Abstract: VOS is a new mapping technique that can serve as an alternative to the well-known technique of multidimensional scaling (MDS). We present an extensive comparison between the use of MDS and the use of VOS for constructing bibliometric maps. In our theoretical analysis, we show the mathematical relation between the two techniques. In our empirical analysis, we use the techniques for constructing maps of authors, journals, and keywords. Two commonly used approaches to bibliometric mapping, both based on MDS, turn… Show more

“…Among the included candidates, the top 25 with most co-authorship links to each other were selected, and their co-authorship links within this network were mapped. VOSviewer creates network maps using the VOS layout and VOS clustering techniques 12,13 . As a result, countries/regions that coauthor with each other more frequently would be grouped into the same cluster and located closer to each other within the network map.…”

“…In view of this continuous and interconnected flow of interests, scientific and research activities are often considered as self-organizing communities (An, Janssen, & Milios, 2002). The nature of the relationships and structure of the communities are represented in what is known as a "bibliometrics map" or "science map" (Buter, Noyons, Van Mackelenbergh, & Laine, 2006;van Eck, Waltman, Dekker, & Van den Berg, 2010). Science maps are symbolic representations of scientific fields or organizations in which the elements of the map are associated with topics or themes.…”

“…• VOS (van Eck & Waltman, 2007) stands for 'visualization of similarities' and is a variant of multidimensional scaling (Borg & Groenen, 2005;van Eck, Waltman, Dekker, & van den Berg, 2010). It is implemented in VOSviewer and in recent versions of Pajek.…”
