A Complex Journey: Cell Wall Remodeling, Interactions, and Integrity During Pollen Tube Growth

Abstract: In flowering plants, pollen tubes undergo a journey that starts in the stigma and ends in the ovule with the delivery of the sperm cells to achieve double fertilization. The pollen cell wall plays an essential role to accomplish all the steps required for the successful delivery of the male gametes. This extended path involves female tissue recognition, rapid hydration and germination, polar growth, and a tight regulation of cell wall synthesis and modification, as its properties change not only along the poll… Show more

“…In Figure 3 , it is observed how enzymes involved in the synthesis or modifications of cellulose, hemicelluloses, or pectin participate in the development of specific floral organs, showing that flower formation requires regulation of several developmental processes with significant participation of the cell wall. Comprehensive reviews have been made, indicating the potential that the cell wall has within plant development [ 6 ], including specifically in flower development [ 106 , 107 ], pollen tube growth [ 108 ], and fertilization [ 91 , 109 ]. However, the function of proteins involved in the formation, development, or arrangement of cell walls is poorly understood in floral tissues.…”

“…Thus, the observation that PbrDGK4 is distributed at the edge of the shank is consistent with the notion that it resides within the plasma membrane. Additionally, the tip of the pollen tube contains various substances related to its growth, including calcium, reactive oxygen species, and vesicles (Cascallares et al, 2020). The vesicles are involved in the process of endocytosis and exocytosis (Ruan et al, 2021).…”

“…For effective fertilisation and seed setting, the pollen from the androecium has to reach the female gametophyte present in the gynoecium, and for this the pollen tube grows and moves through the transmission tract of the style. The extracellular space needed for the pollen tube growth is produced by programmed cell death (PCD), the NO TRANSMITTING TRACT gene encoding a C2H2/C2HC zinc finger transcription factor facilitates this (Cascallares et al, 2020 ). In addition to this, the movement is also facilitated by the expression of CENTRAL CELL GUIDANCE (CCG) gene encoding a transcription factor with a conserved N terminal zinc β-ribbon domain in the central cell of the mature female gametophyte (Chen et al, 2007 ; Li & Yang, 2020 ; Wang et al, 2010 ).…”
