A comprehensive 6-year retrospective study on medialisation thyroplasty in the Indian population

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe a series of patients who have undergone medialisation thyroplasty (with or without arytenoid adduction) at our centre with respect to demographics, aetiology for unilateral vocal fold paralysis, pre- and postoperative maximum phonation time, amount of anterior and posterior medialisation required and complications. A comparative analysis with international studies was also performed. A retrospective analysis was performed on 67 patients, who underwent medialisation thyr… Show more

“…Both theories may partially explain why the correlation between clinician‐rated and patient‐reported voice quality is modest . Surgical intervention for UVFP often restores voice quality to a satisfactory rating based on clinician‐centric instruments and objective acoustical measures, yet certain treated patients are somewhat dissatisfied despite “successful” surgical intervention …”

“…[35][36][37][38] Surgical intervention for UVFP often restores voice quality to a satisfactory rating based on clinician-centric instruments and objective acoustical measures, [39][40][41] yet certain treated patients are somewhat dissatisfied despite "successful" surgical intervention. 6,8,[42][43][44][45][46] Discovery of central auditory processing impairment in UVFP has immediate diagnostic and treatment implications. Because standard screening audiograms will not detect this hearing deficit, comprehensive evaluation of UVFP may require adoption of central auditory processing test batteries.…”

“…Surgical treatment for unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) by medialization laryngoplasty will typically improve voice function substantially. [1][2][3] Nevertheless, treated UVFP patients must often cope with ongoing functional deficits that are revealed under real-life, stressful demands on their voice. 3,4 In one series, 4 among 15 UVFP patients treated by type I thyroplasty, 87% indicated persistent abnormal voice, 43% experienced frequent requests to repeat voiced communications, and 25% reported vocal fatigue by the end of the day.…”
