A Comprehensive Investigation on Abnormal Impoundment of Reservoirs—A Case Study of Qionglin Reservoir in Kinmen Island

Abstract: Leakage is the most serious problem in reservoir operation, because heavy leakage influences reservoir impoundment efficiency and even leads to a complete loss of reservoir functions. Since its completion in 1982, Qionglin Reservoir has never been fully filled with water except in the spring of 1983 when there was heavy rain. The reservoir management unit suspected that its side slopes, bottom or dam might leak and carried out a number of leakage prevention and improvement works, but all of them failed to fulf… Show more

“…The publications analysed highlighted the crucial importance of reservoirs in increasing water resources, while pointing out the need for a complex approach to their management [44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52]. To ensure a stable and uninterrupted water supply, it is assumed that improved reservoir-operation criteria [44] or predictive models using widely available hydrometeorological data can be introduced.…”

“…The experience of impounding at a small reservoir (309,000 m3) in Qionglin reservoir on Kinmen Island, Taiwan that is written by Hung et.al [3] concluded that rainfall is the factor that influenced the impounding of Qionglin reservoir mainly in the climate which the evaporation is relatively higher than rainfall depth. The research plan is to investigate time and increase in water level elevation during reservoir impounding by studying the affected variable so there is obtained the supporting system model formulation of initial impounding.…”

“…The resistivity is highly correlated with the geomaterial and groundwater characteristics, so it has gradually become one of the primary geophysical methods of geotechnical investigation. In the past decade, the ERT has been extensively used in a variety of geotechnical and environmental engineering investigation and monitoring, for instance, in geologic surveys [19,20], fault line surveys [21][22][23][24][25], slipping plane survey and monitoring [26][27][28], groundwater investigation and pollution monitor-ing [29,30], reservoir/dam leakage investigation and monitoring [31,32], refuse landfill leakage investigation and monitoring [33][34][35], and underground tunnel mining [36][37][38].…”
