In the past few decades, the self‐healing surface materials with durable mechanical, functional, and structural properties have attracted enormous research interests, which exhibit great potential in energy conversion devices, sensors, electronic skins, superhydrophobic fabrics, medical/biological hydrogel, and a protective coating. Despite the remarkable progresses achieved in the self‐healing surface, the systematic and overall reviews that focus on self‐healing surface materials are still lacking and in urgent need. Herein, the recent advances in the development of self‐healing surface materials are summarized. The surface damage forms that composed of cracks, scratches, punctures, and surface wear, are systematically reviewed. The self‐healing mechanism and methods at interface are then introduced to briefly explain the basic design principle. The recent developments of functional surfaces including superhydrophobic, oleophobic, antifogging, anti‐icing, antibiofouling, and anticorrosion surfaces with self‐healing functions are further discussed. Finally, the contemporary challenges, and the future perspectives that motivate are proposed to create more innovative self‐healing materials for diverse fields.

What could be the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions if the conventional way of maintaining roads is changed?Emissions of greenhouse gases must be reduced if global warming is to be avoided, and urgent political and technological decisions should be taken. However, there is a lock-in in built infrastructures that is limiting the rate at which emissions can be reduced. Self-healing asphalt is a new type of technology that will reduce the need for fossil fuels over the lifetime of a road pavement, at the same time as prolonging the road lifespan. In this study we have assessed the benefits of using self-healing asphalt as an alternative material for road pavements employing a hybrid input-output-assisted Life-Cycle Assessment, as only by determining the plausible scenarios of future emissions will policy makers identify pathways that might achieve climate change mitigation goals. We have concluded that selfhealing roads could prevent a considerable amount of emissions and costs over the global road network: 16% lower emissions and 32% lower costs compared to a conventional road over the lifecycle.

It is well-accepted that the ionic copolymer poly (ethylene-co-methacrylic) acid (also named EMAA) is one type of self-healing material. This particular capability has great potential for extending the service life of infrastructures. In order to improve the rheological, mechanical, and self-healing properties of asphalt binder and asphalt mixtures, EMAA and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were selected as the additives. In this study, the effects of EMAA and SBR on the performance of bitumen and asphalt mixtures were examined and characterized using various parameters including rheological indices, Glover–Rowe parameter, ductility self-healing rate, fluorescence microscopy, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test on binders, and different testing methods such as complex modulus, thermal stress-restrained specimen test (TSRST), disk-shaped compact tension (DCT), and fatigue–healing–fatigue test on the mixtures. The results showed that EMAA can significantly improve the stiffness and self-healing capacity of virgin and SBR modified binders and mixtures. Moreover, the cracking resistance of EMAA/SBR compound modified binder and mixture showed a significant improvement. However, EMAA is not recommended to be added as a modifier to virgin binders and mixtures due to its poor cracking resistance. Some novel tests and parameters mentioned in this paper are recommended for characterizing binders and mixtures in the future.
