A comprehensive review on the techniques for coconut oil extraction and its application

Abstract: Virgin coconut oil is a useful substance in our daily life. It contains a high percentage of lauric acid which has many health benefits. The current industry has developed several methods to extract the oil out from the coconut fruit. This review paper aims to highlight several common extraction processes used in modern industries that includes cold extraction, hot extraction, low-pressure extraction, chilling, freezing and thawing method, fermentation, centrifugation, enzymatic extraction and supercritical fl… Show more

“…Still, significant differences were observed for all formulations compared to the control (gallic acid). VCO is a powerful antioxidant product which can be used to fight against free radicals in the human body, and it helps to slow down the aging process [47,48]. This bioactivity is possibly associated with the VCO polyphenolic compound, as suggested by some earlier studies [49].…”

“…Bioactive compounds have applications in various chemical industries, including but not limited to polymers and biomaterials (Nogueira et al 2020 ), dyes and textiles (Agnhage et al 2017 ), leather processing (Das et al 2020 ), perfumes, and cosmetics (Sharmeen et al 2021 ). Certain bioactive compounds (oils, fatty acids) have traditionally been used (in the oil and soap industries) (Ng et al 2021 ), whereas the toxicity and unsustainability of conventional chemicals, processes, or end-products have recently accelerated the usage of bio-based substitutes in novel materials, catalysts, as and certain raw materials in the industry (Chin et al 2021 ; Basak et al 2021 ).…”

“…The industrial extraction of oils (palm, coconut, and castor oils) is another important sector of the chemical industry, due to a wide range of applications, ranging from edible oils and hair care products (Ng et al 2021 ) to the manufacture of soaps and grease (Patel et al 2016 ). Moreover, several petrochemical industries in Malaysia are looking into the possibility of using palm oil as well as glycerol sourced from vegetable oil as feedstocks in the manufacture of lubricants (Chin et al 2021 ), shifting resources from fossil fuels to bioactive compounds.…”

“…Coconut oil is extracted from the mature fruit’s endosperm and subjected to chemical treatments, such as alkaline treatment and bleaching [ 31 ]. VCO is extracted by either supercritical fluid carbon dioxide, enzymatic extraction, centrifugation, fermentation, freezing and thawing method, chilling, low-pressure extraction, hot extraction, and/or cold extraction [ 32 ].…”
