A comprehensive review on the carcinogenic potential of bisphenol A: clues and evidence

Abstract: Bisphenol A [BPA; (CH3)2C(C6H4OH)2] is a synthetic chemical used as a precursor material for the manufacturing of plastics and resins. It gained attention due to its high chances of human exposure and predisposing individuals at extremely low doses to diseases, including cancer. It enters the human body via oral, inhaled, and dermal routes as leach-out products. BPA may be anticipated as a probable human carcinogen. Studies using in vitro cell lines, rodent models, and epidemiological analysis have convincingl… Show more

“…BPA is a chemical used worldwide; however, the exposure varies with regard to the source, environment, time of exposure and age of the organism (27,28). Daily exposure is mostly associated to food and drink containers sold on the market, as well as absorption through the skin or through the maternal placenta or breast milk which are risk factors for the fetus and for the newborn baby (27,29). It exerts an estrogen-like profile but it also induces insulin resistance by impairing peripheral insulin receptors or it decreases insulin secretion by acting on insulin-secreting pancreatic β-cells (27,30).…”

“…In a randomized trial, the consumption of canned beverages with a BPA-liner resulted in higher urinary BPA concentrations and an acute increase in blood pressure ( Bae and Hong 2015 ). Given its estrogenic properties ( Khan et al. 2021 ), some biological effects of BPA on the CV system are likely mediated by endocrine disruption (KC12), but BPA may also exert its biological effects through multiple other KCs (e.g., KCs 1, 9, 10, and 11), see Table 2 .…”

“…Apart from genetic changes, exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can disturb the normal functions of the endocrine system in humans and increase the risk of adverse health effects [1]. Bisphenol A (BPA) (an EDC) has a pro-carcinogenic impact in hormone-dependent and hormone-independent cancers [9][10][11]. BPA exposure is reported to alter the cancer cells' biological behaviours, particularly, proliferation, invasion, growth, survival, migration and apoptosis [9,[12][13][14][15][16].…”

BPA exposure is reported to alter the cancer cells' biological behaviours, particularly, proliferation, invasion, growth, survival, migration and apoptosis [9,[12][13][14][15][16]. Recently, we have identified seven genes that have prognostic power for the overall survival in OC, namely Guanylate Binding Protein 5 (GBP5), Insulin Receptor Substrate 2 (IRS2), Keratin 4 (KRT4), long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 707 (LINC00707), Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein L55 (MRPL55), Ribosome Biogenesis Regulator 1 Homolog (RRS1) and Solute Carrier Family 4 Member 11 (SLC4A11).…”
