Communication systems and networks are evolving as an integral part of not only of our everyday life but also as a part of the industry, fundamental infrastructures, companies, etc. Current directions and concepts, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), promise enhanced quality of life, greater business opportunities, cost-effective manufacturing, and efficient operation management through ubiquitous connectivity and deployment of smart physical objects. IoT networks are able to collect, preprocess, and transmit a huge amount of data. A considerable portion of this data is security-and privacycritical data, which makes IoT networks a tempting option for attackers. Given that these networks deal with the actual aspects of our lives and fundamental infrastructures (e.g. smart grids), cybersecurity in such networks is crucial. The large scale of these networks and their unique characteristics and complexity bring further vulnerabilities. In this study we give an introduction to IoT, focusing on the IoT application layer, security requirements, threats, and countermeasures in this layer, and some of the open issues and future research lines.

In the vehicular ad hoc network, moving vehicles can keep communicating with each other by entering or leaving the network at any time to establish a new connection. However, since many users transmit a substantial number of messages, it may cause reception delays and affect the entire system. A certificateless aggregate signature scheme can provide a signature compression that keeps the verification cost low. Therefore, it is beneficial for environments constrained by time, bandwidth, and storage, such as vehicular ad hoc network. In recent years, several certificateless aggregate signature schemes have been proposed. Unfortunately, some of them still have some security and privacy issues under specific existing attacks. This article offers an authentication scheme that can improve security, privacy, and efficiency. First, we apply the certificateless aggregate signature method to prevent the onboard unit devices from leaking sensitive information when sending messages. The scheme is proven to be secure against the Type-1 [Formula: see text] and Type-2 [Formula: see text] adversaries in the random oracle model under the computational Diffie–Hellman problem assumption. Then, the performance evaluation demonstrates that our proposed scheme is more suitable for deployment in vehicular ad hoc network environments.

Research related to vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) has received some significant attention in recent years. Despite all the advantages, the security and privacy in VANETs still become the main challenge that is widely open to discussion. The authentication scheme plays a substantial role to guarantee the security and privacy of information circulation and verification efficiency in VANETs. In this high-density environment, a scalability issue would emerge when the number of message-signature pairs received by a roadside unit (RSU) or vehicles becomes large. This issue happens because those entities cannot sequentially verify each received signature according to the required time limit. Some researchers believe that the symmetric cryptography-based authentication scheme provides a lightweight verification operation, which leads to low computation and communication costs. Combined with the batch verification process, this approach can be very beneficial. However, to the best of our knowledge, not many of those related schemes provide a realistic scenario regarding some illegal signatures' appearance. Could the system identify the forged messages? Is it still efficient enough to do such an operation? In this paper, we propose a lightweight binary tree-based (BT-based) authentication scheme with a batch verification mechanism, that could efficiently identify a modest amount of illegal signatures in the sum of messages. To even improve the operation, we combine our BT-based batch verification scheme with our vehicle reputation scoring system. Given any n received messages with b ≥ 1 illegal ones, the computation cost to verify all these messages only requires approximately (2[⌈lg n⌉ − lg(⌈ b 2 ⌉2)] + 2 ⌈lg(⌈ b 2 ⌉2)⌉+1 − 1) pairing operations, as the best-case scenario. By this approach, we can guarantee the best-case scenario (the most desirable condition) in our BT-based identification appear as much as possible. Hence, the computation cost can be kept low.
