A conceptual framework for hybrid building projects

Abstract: Purpose – This paper aims to focus on hybrid projects as a type of building adaptation work. It seeks to discuss the hybrid building design process in subsets of information and resulting decisions by highlighting the relationship between them. It also aims to present a conceptual framework which was developed by refining, or customising the RIBA Plan of Work. \ud \ud Design/methodology/approach – Field theory formed the theoretical basis for the approach to mapping the hybrid project process. The conceptual f… Show more

“…The importance of 'adaptable buildings' has been frequently discussed in literature, particularly with regard to various facets of building adaptations, such as 'technical and functional performance of adaptable buildings' (Gann and Barlow, 1996;Slaughter, 2001;Kendall, 2003;Larssen and Bjorbery, 2004), 'stakeholders' motivation and benefits' (Arge, 2005;Kalita, 2006), 'regulations and policies' (Kincaid, 2002;Adeyeye, Bouchlaghem and Pasquire, 2010;Ren, Shih, and McKercher, 2014), 'sustainability' (Kincaid, 2000, Thomsen andFlier, 2009) and 'risk' (Remoy and Voordt, 2007). Adaptable buildings are defined as 'dynamic systems that carry the capacity to accommodate a set of evolving demands regarding space, function, and components ' (Adaptable Futures, 2012).…”

“…The session lasted two hours ten minutes. The validation of the framework was done on the criteria of coverage, practicability, usefulness and correctness recommended by Liu (2000), Adeyeye et al (2010) for evaluation of a framework. Table V shows the description and evaluation of the proposed framework.…”

“…The few number of participants was because of the presence of few FM benchmarking experts in the country. The framework was validated on the criteria of coverage, practicability, usefulness and correctness recommended by Liu (2000), Adeyeye et al (2010), Delago and Aspinal for evaluation of a framework. The aim of validating the framework was to ascertain the accuracy and extent at which it describes and guides any facility manager in the conduct of best practice FM benchmarking practice.…”

“…The increasing focus on the environmental performance of designs now extends to such vital aspects as requirements for adaptability [90,91]. Buildings often now require refurbishment, including bringing any upgrades to say the aesthetic and functional performance of a building [90].…”

“…The increasing focus on the environmental performance of designs now extends to such vital aspects as requirements for adaptability [90,91]. Buildings often now require refurbishment, including bringing any upgrades to say the aesthetic and functional performance of a building [90]. The buildings may also come under the need for rehabilitation or some modernisation sometimes with some extension work or indeed any retrofit.…”
