“…The mean force applied in this study (about 150 N) corresponds well with the values reported by Nilsson and others (1973), Von Plocki and others (1988) and Verschooten (1990). Such a force will result in a moment on the fetlock joint of about 28·5 Nm.…”

“…Some work has been done on the forces involved in the performance of the flexion test (Nilsson and others 1973, Keller 1983, Schröder 1985, Verschooten 1990, Verschooten and Verbeeck 1997) and the need for a standard method of performing the test, especially in the case of purchase examinations, has been emphasised by Von Plocki and others (1988). However, textbooks offer far from standard, if any, guidelines on how to perform the test.…”

“…The only textbook which comments on the force to be applied is that by Wyn‐Jones (1988), who says that it is an important factor without further quantifying the statement. In the few publications which comment on the force to be applied when performing the flexion test, forces of 100 N (Verschooten and Verbeeck 1997) and 150 N (Nilsson and others 1973, Von Plocki and others 1988, Verschooten 1990) have been mentioned. Keller (1983) advises a flexion test lasting 90 seconds with a force of 200 to 300 N. He claimed that these relatively large forces were based on a study of 10 horses, but no full results were given and the method by which the forces were measured was not described.…”
