A cooperative framework for integrating ontologies

Abstract: Nowadays, there are systems and frameworks that support Ontology construction processes. However, ontology integration processes have not sufficiently been specified to date. In this article, by making use of a cooperative philosophy, we describe a real framework for the integration of ontologies supplied by a predetermined set of (expert) users, who may be interconnected through a communication network. This framework is based on a set of well-defined assumptions that guarantee the consistency of the ontology… Show more

“…In addition, ontologies will be represented here by means of multiple hierarchical restricted domains (MHRD) in a similar manner to that employed by other authors (see, for instance, Eschenbach & Heydrich, 1995). MHRDs have also been employed by our research group in other projects (Fernández-Breis & Martínez-Béjar, 2002;Fernández-Breis, Martínez-Béjar, Valencia-García, Vivancos-Vicente, & García-Sánchez, 2004). In particular, we term MHRD to a set of concepts holding the following:…”

“…Furthermore, ontology has a standard reference model to integrate information known as knowledge sharing. In practical settings, ontologies have become widely used due to the advantages they have (see for instance [3]). On the one hand, ontologies are reusable, that is, a same ontology can be reused in different applications, either individually or in combination with other ontologies.…”

“…On the other hand, a cooperative methodology is used for combining the ontologies of the students in order to get the group ontology. The integrative methodology proposed in [19] is used. This methodology has already successfully been applied in different domains: (a) Intensive Care Units [37], to develop an ontology-based system for monitoring patients; (b) biological application domains [20]; (c) biomedical domains such as ''diagnosis and plagues in tomatoes" and "diagnosis and diseases caused by protozoa" [17,18] with an academic purpose.…”
