A correlation study of mismatch repair immunohistochemical protein expression of pancreatic solid tumors in cytology cell blocks and matching surgical specimens

Abstract: Introduction Only 15%‐20% of newly diagnosed pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cases are surgically operable. Cytology samples may be the only source for guiding clinical management. Current research indicates that mismatch repair (MMR) status could be valuable for implementing novel treatment modalities. In this study, immunohistochemical (IHC) MMR protein expression on cytology cell blocks was compared with that of the correlating surgical resection specimens. Materials and Methods A retrospective revi… Show more

“…Other tested CKs, CDX2, which is mostly being used for identification of adenocarcinoma of unknown origin, and CK20, which is not usually found in pancreatic tissue require further extensive assessments [ 26 , 27 ]. Also, the MMR proteins (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 and PMS2) are considered to be a predicting factor for survivability in the case of PAC patients [ 28 ]. However, our results show that by providing a univariate analysis, patient’s survival was only associated with tumoral location and its staging, surgical parameters and only CK7 positivity ( p =0.015).…”

“…Currently, MSI and MMR protein deficiency have been explored in different malignancies, particularly to address an indication of ICPI [82][83][84][85][86][87][88]. Exploring the MMR/MSI status should become the new standard in poorly differentiated NEN, regardless of germline mutations consistent with LS [85][86][87][88].…”
