A decade of optical coherence tomography in Russia: From experiment to clinical practice

Abstract: We give a retrospective review of studies performed by a joint team of researchers from the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy and related to practical implementation of optical coherence tomography and its use as a novel method for biomedical diagnostics.1. Observation of the internal structure of living biological tissues has always been attractive for a researcher and a doctor. With the discovery of X-rays, it became possible for the… Show more

“…The 70 mm length and 28 mm diameter of the probe permitted to obtain images of transverse size up to 6 mm of skin. The probe connected with ophthalmological instrument has been used for monitoring of the glaucoma process by observation of the structure of retina around the eye-nerve disc as well as monitoring of laser surgery of cataract [8]. “…Optical coherence tomography (OCT) [1,2] is a new rapidly developing modality utilized principles of scanning low coherence interferometry (LCI) and optical coherence-domain reflectometry [3]. Image reconstruction of tissues structure by OCT is a field exciting a great deal of interest especially in terms of day-to-day medical and biomedical diagnostics, health care and general physiological studies [4][5][6]. Last decade various OCT systems have been developed and widely used in a number of medical and biomedical applications [7][8][9][10] (see also [11,12] and references there), including dermatology and skin tissues diagnostics [13][14][15][16][17].…”

“…Optical diagnostic techniques can help to guide biopsy for superficial tissues, such as skin and mucous membranes. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a powerful interferometric technology used to obtain crosssectional tissue images noninvasively with micrometer resolution, millimeter penetration depth, and video-rate imaging speed [3][4][5]. The miniaturization of optical imaging systems has been one of the successes of micro-systems engineering.…”
