Smart Energy (SE) has emerged as a critical technology in tackling global challenges like climate change while addressing the rising energy demands driven by today's data-intensive industrial revolution. SE integrates information and communication technologies into energy systems, optimizing them to meet these challenges effectively. At the core of SE operations are smart meters, playing a fundamental role in ensuring efficient functionality. These devices collect data, which is then leveraged to derive Business Intelligence (BI) for operations across the entire spectrum, from the sensing infrastructure to the cloud, primarily utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) technology framework. With the increasing complexity of operations and the growing demand for optimization and enhanced functionality, the SE technology stack is evolving to integrate across all layers and domains. This integration has led to the stratification of computational load across IoT layers, intensifying the dependence on smart meter data for BI. Consequently, smart meters themselves have evolved to become more functional and complex. This paper's novelty lies in its comprehensive exploration of the integration of BI with smart meter data. It delves into various aspects, including the different layers of intelligent operations within SE systems, the current state of the art, and diverse implementations of smart meters and their applications across operational locations, ranging from consumers to fog computing. The paper concludes by identifying research gaps and future directions, offering insights into the evolving requirements for the next generation of SE systems and the necessary adaptations in smart metering infrastructure to support these roles. This work contributes to a better understanding of the evolving landscape of data and computation in the context of SE, facilitating more efficient and effective energy management solutions.

Wireless power transfer is emerging as the preeminent way to charge electric vehicles, but there appears to be no fair way to measure the power transfer. In this paper, Faraday Coil Transfer-Power Measurement (FC-TPM) is presented. FC-TPM employs non-contact, open-circuited sense coils to measure the electromagnetic field from wireless power transfer and calculates the real power propagating through the air gap between the transmitter and receiver coils. What is measured is the real electromagnetic power, representing the pure dispensation of energy that unambiguously demarcates the losses on either side. FC-TPM was demonstrated to be 0.1% accurate in hardware over an Rx coil misalignment of up to 10 cm using a 1 kW wireless power transfer system. Fair metering incentivizes businesses and individuals to make choices that conserve energy and advance technology by providing more information and by properly assigning the financial loss. This paper is accompanied by a video highlighting the essential contributions of this paper.

The transportation industry at present is moving towards electrification and the number of electric vehicles in the market increased with the different policies of the directorate. Consumers, who wish to contribute to green mobility are concerned about the limited availability of charging points due to high manufacturing costs and the interoperability issues related to smart charging. This work proposes an Internet of things-based low-cost, interoperable smart electric vehicle supply equipment for deploying in all charging stations. The device hardware is designed to monitor, analyze, and collect consumed energy by the vehicle and transfer this data to a connected network. The pre-defined messages associated with the firmware will help to record this data with a remote management server for further processing. The messages are defined in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), which helps to overcome the interoperability issue. The device is smart because it can gather energy usage, detect device faults, and be intimate with the controller for a better operational environment. The associated management servers and mobile applications help to operate the smart device remotely and keep track of the usage statics. The developed low-cost, interoperable smart model is most suitable for two and three-wheeler vehicles.
