Nowadays, more and more increasingly hard computations are performed in challenging fields like weather forecasting, oil and gas exploration, and cryptanalysis. Many of such computations can be implemented using a computer cluster with a large number of servers. Incoming computation requests are then, via a so-called load balancing policy, distributed over the servers to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, being able to switch-off some servers during low period of workload, gives potential to reduced energy consumption. Therefore, load balancing forms, albeit indirectly, a trade-off between performance and energy consumption. In this paper, we introduce a syntax for load-balancing policies to dynamically select a server for each request based on relevant criteria, including the number of jobs queued in servers, power states of servers, and transition delays between power states of servers. To evaluate many policies, we implement two load balancers in: (i) iDSL, a language and tool-chain for evaluating service-oriented systems, and (ii) a simulation framework in AnyLogic. Designing Cyber-Physical Systems with aDSL: a Domain-Specific Language and Tool Support

A Cyber-Physical System (CPS) comprises the integration of computation, software, networking, and physical processes. Consequently, CPS models extend traditional embedded system models with an increased support for hybrid and heterogeneous models, networking, time synchronization, and especially interoperability. To assist engineers in designing CPSs, we have developed aDSL, a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) that comes with fully-automated tool support and is tailored to interoperability of CPS. The aDSL tool support includes: (i) interactive model description with input validation; (ii) the computation of possible operation modes of subsystems and parts; and, (iii) checking the adherence to requirements for various design alternatives and finding the Pareto optimal designs given these requirements. Moreover, aDSL generates intuitive visualizations throughout the toolchain which help design engineers to better understand the implications of design decisions and communicate them to stakeholders. aDSL has been applied to an agricultural tractor-trailer system case study in which aDSL quickly evaluated 48 designs and rendered all the visualizations of the results.

Efficiently Computing Latency Distributions by Combined Performance Evaluation Techniques

Service-oriented systems are designed for interconnecting with other systems. The provided services face timing constraints, the so-called latencies. We present a high-level performance evaluation technique that can be used by a system designer to obtain distributions of these latencies. This technique is capable of capturing nondeterministic, probabilistic and real-time aspects in one go. Under the hood, the technique is equipped with two mechanisms: (i) selection of the right abstraction of the model (to prevent a state space explosion) by evaluating the performance of executing models of different complexities; and (ii) an efficient algorithm in which basic estimates, simulation, and (probabilistic) model checking are combined. We illustrate our approach with an case on image processing of interventional X-ray systems.
