The aim of the present study was to examine whether the composition of the diet among patients with psoriasis dffpered from a regular Norwegian diet and to relate nutrient intake to the clinical status of the patients' disease. Patients were recruited from all five university Departments of Dermatology in Norway. The participants filled in a quantitative food-frequency questionnaire before attending a clinical trial. Dietary data were available from ninety-three men and forty-three women, aged 17-73 years, witb stable plaque psoriasis involving more than 8 % of the body surface.The dietary intake of the patients was compared with the diet of a reference group randomly selected from the Norwegian population, and related to a dermatological score of the psoriatics. The patients' intakes of energy and nutrients were fairly similar to those found in the reference group, except for a lower content of carbohydrates and sugar in the diet of female patients. None of the nutrients gave statistically signifieant contributions to explain the clinical score valnes when analysed by correlations.

Aim: Many randomized controlled trials have been performed on the efficacy and mechanism of action of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) on psoriasis. However, contradictory results have been obtained. This study wants to assess the effects of n-3 PUFAs on the severity of psoriasis. Methods:The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for all randomized controlled trials and prospective observational studies comparing the efficacy of n-3 PUFAs versus control in adult patients with psoriasis. The primary outcome was psoriasis severity as measured by the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) score. Results:The initial search yielded 732 articles, 720 of which were excluded. The data of the 12 remaining studies were extracted. Some studies found that n-3 PUFAs were associated with improvements in the PASI score, erythema, scaling, itching, area involved and infiltration. However, some studies did not find reduction in scaling, erythema, area involved or thickness in the treatment group. Conclusion:It is still inconclusive whether use of n-3 PUFAs in patients with psoriasis is associated with improvements in severity of psoriasis and other outcomes.

Fish oil supplements are currently being nationally advertised, and many physicians are being queried about their clinical utility. Epidemiologic studies reveal a low incidence of cardiovascular disease in people, such as the Eskimos, who eat large amounts of seafood. Cardiovascular health may be improved because fish and fish oil supplements lower plasma lipid levels (especially triglycerides), inhibit platelet aggregation, and may decrease blood pressure and viscosity and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Preliminary observations also suggest a potential future role for fish oils in the treatment of some autoimmune diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Patients with serum triglyceride levels greater than 5.64 mmol/L and/or cholesterol levels greater than 7.75 mmol/L refractory to dietary management may benefit from a medically supervised trial of fish oil supplements. Data currently available are insufficient to recommend fish oil supplements for the general public, or for patients with other diseases, and side effects must also be considered. These include occasional adverse lipid changes, potential for bleeding and vitamin E deficiency, and, with some preparations, vitamin A and D toxicity.
