-Objective: To verify awareness and attitudes toward epilepsy in Southern Brazil. Method: A questionnaire about familiarity with the disease, awareness and attitudes toward epileptics was applied to 832 inhabitants of Caxias do Sul. The answers were analyzed in three different groups: G1, non-university students; G2, university students up to the second year; and G3, university students with more than two years education and university graduates. Results: University students and graduates are better informed regarding causes and treatment of epilepsy. Moreover, those interviewees present less negative attitudes toward epileptics. However, a large part of that group lacks some basic information on the disease. Conclusion: There is lack of information on epilepsy among Brazilians. Education campaigns should be carried out in order to clarify some aspects concerning epilepsy.KEY WORDS: epilepsy, knowledge, attitudes, questionnaire, Brazil. Conhecimento, atitudes e percepções sobre epilepsia no Sul do Brasil RESUMO -Objetivo:Verificar o conhecimento e as atitudes sobre epilepsia na população de Caxias do Sul. Metodo: Foi aplicado um questionário sobre familiaridade com a doença, conhecimentos e atitudes diante de um portador de epilepsia a 832 moradores da cidade. As respostas foram analisadas em três grupos distintos: G1, não-universitários; G2, universitários até o segundo ano; e G3, universitários com mais de dois anos e graduados. Resultados: Os universitários e graduados possuem melhor conhecimento sobre causas e tratamento da epilepsia. Além disso, esses entrevistados apresentam menos atitudes negativas para com o portador de epilepsia. Entretanto, uma boa parte desse grupo apresenta falta de alguns conhecimentos bá-sicos sobre a doença. Conclusão: Há falta de informação à população brasileira sobre epilepsia. Campanhas educacionais devem ser realizadas no intuito de desmistificar alguns aspectos concernentes à epilepsia.

RESUMO -Vários estudos em diversos paises mostram em relação à epilepsia a falta de conhecimentos, os preconceitos e as repercussões negativas para os pacientes. Avaliamos os conhecimentos e atitudes de universitários da área da saúde no início e ao final dos cursos. Foram aplicados questionários contendo 15 questões em relação à epilepsia a 564 universitários (290 do primeiro e 274 do último ano) de cinco cursos (ciências farmacêuticas, fisioterapia, medicina, nutrição e terapia ocupacional). Os estudantes de último ano tiveram maior familiaridade com epilepsia, melhor conhecimento de suas causas e de seu tratamento. Também em questões relacionadas ao trabalho e à conduta durante as crises, ao final dos cursos cresceram as posturas positivas. Não obstante, porcentagem significativa dos universitários do último ano ainda apresentou importantes lacunas de conhecimento em relação à epilepsia o que sugere a necessidade de ações dirigidas a minorar essa situação.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: epilepsia, aspectos psicossociais. Knowledge and attitude toward epilepsy among health area studentsABSTRACT -Several studies in different countries show a lack of knowledge about epilepsy with consequent prejudice and discrimination to epileptic patients. We aim to evaluate knowledge and attitudes of health area junior and senior students. Simple self-administered questionnaires were applied to 290 junior students and to 274 senior students. Senior students had more familiarity, better knowledge about etiology and had a more positive perception about anticonvulsant medication. Positive attitudes about work were more common among senior students. Although, significant percentage of students had a lack of knowledge about epilepsy. A third of the respondents could use improper and potentially harmful measures during a seizure. Actions directed to increment the knowledge and attitudes of health area students could improve the quality of life of patients with epilepsy.

Arts-based knowledge translation (ABKT) strategies represent an innovative approach to disseminate results of qualitative studies, especially to tackle social issues, such as stigma and prejudice, due to knowledge gaps. Epilepsy affects 1% of the world population and brings a strong psychosocial impact to the patient, family members, and caregivers. People with epilepsy have difficulties to establish social relationships due to stigma. Methods: In this study, we narrate the construction of an aerial and contemporary dance based on the results of a qualitative study with patients with epilepsy, their families, and health professionals, called "'Dialogue with Emotions' to overcome barriers and to improve quality of life in epilepsy". Under the ABKT classification, this study is defined as a strategy of subjective key messages, which are presented as active performances (contemporary dance and aerial acrobacies). Results: In this sense, the choreography called "Perspective" presented elements that relate to suffering, pain, fear, social isolation, followed by mutual support, resilience, adaptation, and happiness. Through its scenic poetry and acrobatics combined with special lighting effect and soundtrack, this choreography represents the potential to overcome suffering and experience happiness if people embrace a different perspective over epilepsy. Conclusion: This presentation conveyed perceptions on epilepsy in a way to create an experience for its audience. It represented an opportunity to stimulate reflection, discussion, and knowledge construction between members of the academy, as well as patients and caregivers. Thus, this artistic presentation was able to promote discussions about epilepsy, disseminating research results, promoting empathy and compassion.
