A Facile Approach to Deposit Graphenaceous Composite Coatings by Suspension Plasma Spraying

Abstract: This paper demonstrates, for the first time ever, the deposition of graphenaceous composite coatings using an easy, yet robust, suspension plasma spraying (SPS) process. As a case study, a composite coating comprising 8 wt.% of yttria-stabilized-zirconia (8YSZ) and reinforced with graphene oxide (GO) was deposited on a steel substrate. The coatings were sprayed using an 8YSZ-GO mixed suspension with varied plasma spray parameters. Establishing the possibility of retaining the graphene in a ceramic matrix using… Show more

“…Therefore, the G band of graphene was observed in a similar position to that of GO. The D band is an indication of disorder, which may emerge from specific defects such as vacancies, grain boundaries, and amorphous carbon species . The intensity ratio of these two bands showed the quality of the product.…”

“…The suspension was fed axially in the plasma torch to deposit the coatings. A schematic illustration on processing of GNP incorporated ceramic matrix (YSZ) coatings via SPS is shown in our recent work [37]. Argon was used as the atomizing gas to deposit both the coatings.…”

“…Venturi et al also utilized graphene in the form of suspension feedstock to deposit coating on steel substrates using S-HVOF process, which demonstrated excellent wear resistance [35]. Recently, Ganvir et al also reported graphene retention in a YSZ matrix despite utilizing the relatively higher processing temperature technique of axial suspension plasma spray (A-SPS) [37].…”

“…A desire to further build on the SPS expertise has now led to dedicated efforts aimed at utilizing the SPS route to deposit various other oxides and carbides that can be potentially promising candidates for tribological applications. In this context, some early work has already been carried out with Al 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , Cr 3 C 2 , and TiC suspensions, as well as graphene [71][72][73]. These have yielded microstructures and properties that inspire confidence (Figure 9) to be further investigated in detail.…”
