A Fair QoS-Based Resource Allocation Scheme for a Time-Slotted Optical OV-CDMA Network: A Unified Approach

Abstract: In this paper, we develop a fair resource allocation scheme for a multiclass time-slotted optical overlapped code-division multiple-access (OV-CDMA) network. The resource management scheme is fair in the sense that the users have their power and rate allotted according to their quality of service (QoS) requirements. In addition, no class of users can dominate over the other classes. A unified framework for the resource controlling scheme is proposed. It consists of simply finding a single control parameter bas… Show more

“…Moreover, this technology can meet a broad range of services with different and variable demands of bit rate, connection duration, frequency of use, and setup time [4]. Hence, OCDMA networks can be controlled at the physical layer to adapt to traffic variations and customer demands [5]. In OCDMA networks, each different code defines a user and different code-users can share a common channel.…”

“…The intensity of the transmitted optical signal is directly adjusted from the laser source with respect to the target SNIR by the PSO algorithm. The optimization method based on the heuristic PSO approach is attractive due to its performance-complexity trade-off and fairness features, the optimization methods that deploy matrix inversion, purely numerical procedures, and other heuristic approaches [5,14]. Furthermore, for comparison purposes, we have included numerical results for the heuristic optimization technique based on ant colony optimization (ACO), aiming to validate and demonstrate the effectiveness of heuristic approaches over deterministic matrix inversion methods.…”

“…The optical power control problem has been recently investigated in the context of access networks aiming at solving the near-far problem [7][8] and establishing the QoS at the physical layer [9][10][11]. In [7], the impact of power control on the random access protocol was investigated.…”

“…In [8], the effect of near-far problem and a detailed review of the power control were presented including the use of distributed algorithms. On the other hand, in [9][10][11][12] the concept that users of various classes should transmit at different power levels was applied. Distinct power levels were obtained with power attenuators [10], adjustable encoders/decoders [11], and adjustable transmitters [12].…”
