A Fish Scale–Derived Collagen Matrix as Artificial Cornea in Rats: Properties and Potential

Abstract: In spite of technical difficulties, it was feasible to use the FSCM for ALK, whereas IL placement led to melting of the anterior lamella. Further studies are necessary for better understanding of its immunogenicity. The light scatter and transmission data show that the first version of this FSCM is comparable to human cornea tissue in this respect.

“…This approach, suffers a number of limitations including a shortage of suitable donor tissue in many countries. In recent years, corneal tissue engineering has emerged as a promising alternative to transplantation and significant progress has been made in this area with keratoprostheses (4,5), xenografts (6)(7)(8) and tissue-engineered corneas (9) entering clinical or pre-clinical development.…”

“…22,23 Moreover, lamellar grafts could make use of unqualified corneas for PK, 12 and even artificial corneal lamellas would be potential substitutes. 24 It is difficult to accurately estimate the preoperative corneal endothelial function in HSK corneas with deep stromal scarring. In a report by Sarnicola and Toro, 52 patients with HSK scars were treated with DALK.…”

“…A number of alternative cell carriers including human- and animal-derived collagen [6365], fibrin [10, 11, 13, 24], contact lenses [22, 66], human anterior lens capsules [67], and silk fibroin [68, 69] have been proposed to overcome disadvantages associated with HAM use such as disease transmission, variable tissue quality, and limited transparency. However, these alternatives also have their own drawbacks.…”
