This paper proposes and implements an all-in-one induction heating system, which can accommodate both pan-shaped and wok-shaped utensils. Traditionally, the pan is heated by a planar induction cooktop while the wok is heated by a curved induction cooktop. In this paper, both magnetic inductive coupling and magnetic resonant coupling are utilized to achieve excellent heating performance of the wok based on a planar primary coil. The key is to flexibly employ a detachable frustum coil for heating the wok. Specifically, the theoretical models of the proposed induction heating system with and without using the frustum coil are derived to analyze the proposed system. Computational simulation results of the magnetic and thermal fields of the proposed system are provided to elaborate the heating performance of the wok. A 1500 W prototype is designed and built. The calculated, simulated and experimental results are all in good agreement, which validate the feasibility of the proposed induction heating system well.

Summary In this work, a capacitor‐less self‐resonating coil‐based induction heating (IH) system with magnetic resonant coupling has been proposed. In the conventional heating system, the inclusion of additional capacitor for creating the resonance results in poor efficiency of overall system. To overcome this issue, a bifilar coil system is implemented, which leads to series resonance at a particular frequency. The key mechanism is self‐resonance wireless power transfer concept to IH system; hence, no capacitor is needed in the system. The coil has a series association of the coil inductance and capacitance at the resonant operating condition. A mathematical modeling and steady state analysis is performed for the conventional (solenoidal) coil and bifilar coil to estimate the actual value of the capacitance and inductance of the coil. The performance of the bifilar coil system is tested through COMSOL multiphysics simulation tool and parameters like eddy current, magnetic flux, and temperature distribution in the work piece are analyzed. The experimental setup of the bifilar coil‐aided IH system is implemented with PIC16F877A microcontroller, and FLIR thermal imager is used to analyze the temperature distribution on the work piece. The experimental results are compared with the simulation results, and the bifilar coil system provides a promising solution.

We analyze the feasibility of heating non-metallic cookware, unappropriate for heating by means of induced currents, with the purpose of extending the applicability range of the current induction heating cooktops. In order to turn materials as glass, ceramic, wood or plastic into suitable for the induction heating technology, we propose the use of thin layers of a metal (not necessarily a ferromagnetic material) which can be deposited on a surface by means of a thin or thick layer technology. For this purpose, the inductive performance of these layers is investigated by means of an analytical electromagnetic model, finite element simulations and experimental measurements. Calculations point out that for a specific induction arrangement working at a fixed frequency, it exists a thickness which maximizes the induction efficiency for each layer material. The suitability of this result is tested by means of a set of samples with copper thin layers whose thicknesses range from one hundred of nanometers to tens of micrometers, which are implemented using a phase vapor deposition (PVD) technology. The obtained induction efficiency and equivalent resistance are compared with those obtained with conventional ferromagnetic materials. As a proof of concept, the inner and outer bottoms of two glass pots are covered with a copper layer of 2 µm, and 1.5 µm, respectively, and 1 kW is inductively supplied by means of a series resonant inverter, reaching the boiling water conditions.
