A flexible proximity sensor formed by duplex screen/screen-offset printing and its application to non-contact detection of human breathing

Abstract: We describe a flexible capacitance-type sensor that can detect an approaching human without contact, fabricated by developing and applying duplex conductive-ink printing to a film substrate. The results of our calculations show that the difference in size between the top and bottom electrodes of the sensor allows for the spatial extension of the electric field distribution over the electrodes. Hence, such a component functions as a proximity sensor. This thin and light device with a large form factor can be ar… Show more

“…Previous studies highlight non-inferiority of at-home PSG in the management of OSA patients regarding both feasibility and repeatability, leading to shorter waiting times and substantial cost savings 31,32 . Nevertheless, simplified alternatives to complete PSG are needed to further decrease complexity and intrusiveness 33 . In this way, recent studies aimed at assessing abbreviated protocols at home against domiciliary PSG focus on single-channel approaches, mainly oximetry 25,34,35 In addition, several studies focused on the validation of single-channel airflow monitoring against in-laboratory PSG [36][37][38][39][40] .…”

“…Screen printing can be used for wiring a connecting device to another device, coils, or devices that do not require high‐resolution such as sensing materials . Recently, screen‐offset printing has been developed to address the low resolution, faint prints, and non‐uniform thickness of printed patterns given by screen printing . Screen‐offset printing enables flat patterns of silver electrodes with line widths/spaces of 30/30 µm.…”

“…To overcome these problems, we applied a screen-offset printing method (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13) that we previously developed to fabricate patterns on an adhesive material. Figure 1 shows a schematic image of the screen-offset printing method.…”
