A forensic evaluation of plague – a re-emerging infectious disease with biowarfare potential

Abstract: Plague is an acute infectious disease caused by the gram-negative cocco-bacillus Yersinia pestis. It has been responsible for 200 million deaths throughout history with three major pandemics. There are three forms: bubonic, septicaemic and pneumonic, each carrying a significant mortality rate. The usual transmission is from fleas carried by rodents. Recently, it has been listed as one of the reemerging infectious diseases globally, with a potential use in bioterrorism. At autopsy there may be lymphadenopathy, … Show more

“…Y. pestis is also considered to be a category A agent with bioengineered multi-drug resistant-Y. pestis with the potential to be used as a bioterrorism weapon [221,222]. There is therefore a need to develop precision treatment schemes using antibiotic combinations or other biotherapeutics, including monoclonal antibodies [223].…”

“…Y. pestis is responsible for causing some of the world's worst pandemics, and its societal impacts have been compared with the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic ( Glatter and Finkelman, 2021 ). In addition to being classified as a re-emerging infectious disease with biowarfare potential ( Byard, 2020 ), plague is also ranked amongst emerging infectious diseases in Africa in the 21st Century ( Fenollar and Mediannikov, 2018 ). Although eradicated in most countries, Tanzania is among the handful of countries in Africa where human plague still persists.…”
