A framework for analysing neighbourhood resilience

Abstract: 2'Resilience' is the capability of dealing with future shocks and stresses and continuing to function. This paper puts forward a comprehensive framework for analysing and improving resilience at the neighbourhood scale, which is an effective and necessary scale at which to effect change. The important parts of this framework are the definition of the essential needs of a community, identification of future risks to a neighbourhood (climate change related and non-related) and the execution of a series of clearl… Show more

“…Neighbourhoods can vary in size depending on the context and factors such as density of development (Uda and Kennedy 2015)-as illustrated by the case studies included in this research. Although neighbourhoods are not usually defined as administrative units, they are characterised by clearly defined boundaries that can allow them to 'function as an autonomous or semi-autonomous piece of the city' (Newton, Newman et al 2022: 36).…”

Unlike neighbourhoods, 'districts' and 'precincts' are often delineated by administrative boundaries (Koch, Girard et al 2012).…”

“…By doing so, UDP innovates, and assures the ethical and transparent delivery of information that acknowledges those that are or were involved in the production of research being addressed. This issue of UDP emphasises this need once more, presenting three innovative research papers: 'Security sensitivity index: evaluating urban vulnerability' by Shach-Pinsly and Ganor (2015); 'A framework for analysing neighbourhood resilience' by Uda and Kennedy (2015); and 'Strategic redevelopment of brownfield sites in Tehran, Iran' by Zekavat and Motamedi (2015).…”
