A framework for analyzing city-wide impact of building-integrated renewable energy

Abstract: Recently, the integration of renewables such as photovoltaic panels, solar water heaters, ground-source heat pumps, and fuel cells into buildings is increasing. The increase of building-integrated renewables affects the energy mix, energy flows from the grid, CO2 emission, and energy system cost in cities. The urban-scale effects of increased building-integrated renewables have been investigated on a representative district (a Dong) in Seoul. Unlike the previous studies which did not consider non-solar renewable… Show more

“…Many studies have shown that the technical components for adoption and fast penetration of renewables in households are important as well [52]. Building-integrated renewable energy and smart digitalized home technologies with integrated energy management systems can considerably enlarge the penetration of renewable energy in residential buildings, as well as increase the willingness to pay for renewables in households [53][54][55].…”

“…Viable RE systems for buildings typically include photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, solar thermal energy, combined heat and power systems (CHPs), and ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) [18]. These RE sources can be exploited for on-site or distributed energy supply to buildings [20,21] and can be utilized to provide electricity, heating, and cooling [22]. The utilization of RE sources is integral to the achievement of green buildings and green communities, as evidenced by various studies [19,[23][24][25].…”

“…Due to the increasing cost and carbon emission of conventional fossil energy, renewable energy has gradually gained increasing interest in the research community (Leirpoll, et al, 2021), including architecture (Song & Song, 2020). As the representation of renewable energy sources, solar energy has great potential capacity to building energy management (Guermoui, Melgani, & Danilo, 2018).…”
