Sustainable innovation is a solution for the hospitality and tourism (H&T) industries to cope with the COVID-19 crisis, build resilience, and ensure survival post-pandemic. The primary aim of our review is to systematically identify and critically review the literature on sustainable innovation in H&T amid COVID-19 (conducted in 2020 and 2021), in order to synthesize and classify prevalent types, antecedents, and outcomes of sustainable innovation. The authors present a comprehensive review of the 58 articles on sustainable innovation in H&T through the Web of Science (WoS) database, spanning over 2 years (2020–2021). This review demonstrates that since the beginning of COVID-19, H&T have strongly mobilized network technologies (especially social media and digital platforms) and data-processing technologies (especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)) in comparison with physical-digital interface technologies (especially Virtual Reality (VR)), while physical-digital process technologies remain very limited in these industries. Several relevant antecedents of the adoption of sustainable innovation, more specifically digital technologies, have been identified at multiple levels of analysis, including the organizational, managerial, and stakeholder levels. Our research also reveals several consequences of the adoption of sustainable innovation in H&T. These consequences were congregated according to the three main dimensions related to sustainability in economic, social, and environmental outcomes. This study provides important practical implications for the H&T sectors in the digital era and post-pandemic. The current research is the first study to systematically and critically review sustainable innovation in an H&T context.

Strategic Innovation as a Factor of Adaptation of National Economies to the Development of Global Value Chains

In age of sustainable development, strategic innovations have become the most important factor in the adaptation of national economies to dynamic global changes, encompassing trade and economic relations between the leading and developing countries of the World. At the same time, the task of this study was to reveal the complex and contradictory role of strategic innovations in the development of national economies against the background of the transformation of global value chains (GVCs). Main methods for solving the problem were empirical methods of comparative and structural analysis, as well as econometrics. The study analyzed 44 countries classified by the World Bank in the group of countries with per capita incomes below and above the average, as well as with high income. Results of the calculations made it possible to establish a highly differentiated relationship between the share of products manufactured by foreign companies operating in the host countries, on the one hand, and indicators of the dynamics of foreign direct investment (the number of researchers engaged in R&D, the number of technical specialists involved in research and development (R&D), the cost of research and development in the territory of the host countries), on the other hand. This made it possible to determine the role of strategic innovation in the adaptation of national economies. The established dependencies expand the understanding of the role of strategic innovations in the formation and further development of global value chains and their significance in evolution: from process and product innovations of individual companies to the formation of global innovation ecosystems.

Purpose: The role of speculators in distributing products across rural areas is increasing the poverty rate in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to develop a conceptual framework of the rural logistics system model to influence the welfare and sustainability of farmers.Design/methodology/approach: Conceptual framework was used to evaluate logistics and supply chain networks. The method consists of developing stages based on four components, namely network structure, management, resources, and business processes. Furthermore, it also proposed the management function of the rural logistics system models.Findings: The model of a rural logistics system obtained in this study consists of 1) a trade related to the network of business, 2) a freight, related to the flow of goods, and 3) management functions related to crucial activities in rural logistics management.Research limitations/implications: This model is conceptual, therefore, future studies must accommodate optimizing models to predict the performance of rural logistics systems when they are applied in Indonesia.Practical implications: This study promotes the actors in intermediaries of the rural logistics system to synergize the distribution of goods effectively and efficiently. It also reduces the role of speculators in product distribution in form of availability and price in rural areas.Social implications: This model is a strategy to achieve the Rural Sustainable development Goals (Rural-SDGs) agenda and complements the Blueprint of The National Logistics System.Originality/value: There are fewer studies in rural logistics compared to other fields such as agricultural logistics, food logistics, disaster logistics, etc. Therefore, this study organizes the actors in the rural logistics network and plans management functions for the efficient distribution of products across Indonesia. It also raises the awareness of logistics management to improve the welfare of rural communities.
